Reward Great Work
Another element of the valued employee is the idea that their work doesn’t go unnoticed. When someone is doing something exceptional, make it clear that you recognize their work and are appreciative.
Part of this equation means that you, as an employer, have to take an interest in the work that is being done. Taking some time to reflect on individual employees and take note of their accomplishments is extremely important in this day and age.
The extension of this idea lies in opportunities for advancement. It may be the case that your company is small and there aren’t open positions for excellent employees to move into.
If this is the case, consider using that person’s skills to allow them a chance at creating new positions and working to expand the company. Advancement, in some cases, simply means the opportunity to work on new things that will advance skills and income.
The second piece of the employee development puzzle is bringing your entire team together.
This can be a difficult task, but it’s essential that the people in your office work with one another in a productive manner. This can happen when a couple of things are in place:
People in your office should feel an obligation to uphold the work of everyone else. It’s similar to the idea of the group project in middle school or high school.
Nobody wanted to be partnered with the students who wouldn’t uphold their end of the deal; when one person slacks, the rest of the group suffers and has to do more work.
Similarly, your office should be comprised of people who care about the well being and work experience of others on the team. This can’t happen, however, if people are confined to individual workspaces and projects. When all of your work is done for yourself, you are the only one who suffers when it doesn’t get done.
Get an employee who loses interest in that work and their position, and that work is liable to be lost to apathy. First, you don’t want anyone to lose interest in their work. Second, you want to make sure that things get done because people want to get them done.
Do your best to set up an environment where people are working together, in regular communication, and making strides to ensure that no one has to work more than anyone else.
Your team won’t feel any connection to one another if they don’t have an opportunity to get to know each other.
Work relationships can certainly develop through the office alone, but team building events and activities certainly strengthen those bonds a great deal. This can and should be as simple as providing opportunities for people to meet outside of the workplace.
A bowling alley, a bar, a recreation center, a picnic. Any place where people have the opportunity to get to know one another on a more personal basis. Hopefully, those interactions can lead to independent gatherings and closer relationships.
People who are invested in the community they work in are going to be happier to come to work and feel more purpose when they do their work.
You have a responsibility to respect that community as an entity as well. This means getting a feel for what your employees value as a group and responding with support.
One way to do this is by giving back to issues and causes that your team values. Getting a feel for what those issues might be is as simple as asking around, sending out email surveys, or some other means of communicating with the people in your office.
