Love Your Location: The 10 Best New Zealand Wedding Venues

If you’re thinking of having a destination wedding, New Zealand is a relatively easy choice for foreigners to get married.

Since planning a wedding is difficult and expensive (check out this article if you’re looking to make more money for the wedding), we want to make choosing a venue as easy as possible. Check out our list of the 10 best New Zealand wedding venues for a comprehensive list to save you time on finding your ideal location.

1. Black Barn Vineyard

Vineyards are popular New Zealand wedding venues, but this one might be the best of the best. One of the best features of Black Barn Vineyard is that it’s able to accommodate a variety of different wedding sizes. It has six different spaces to offer.

Black Barn Bistro accommodates up to 110 people. Enter through a walkway surrounded by fig trees to look out over the courtyard that is surrounded by grape vines. Here, you’ll get a great view of Hawke’s Bay.

The underground cellar is a beautiful wine cellar with timber doors, steel beams, and concrete walls. And it’s easy to move the ceremony here in case of unexpected rain. You can also use this beautiful location for unique wedding photos.

For a more intimate wedding, the river room is a perfect choice and can accommodate up to 40 people. It’s located above the Tuki Tuki River and offers an amazing view of Te Mata Peak. However, since it’s located among residential properties, there are strict noise restrictions in place.

Finally, the most versatile destination is right on the bank of the Tuki Tuki River. It can be tailored to fit parties ranging from 50 to 200. This site also offers amazing views of Tuki Tuki River and Te Mata Peak, but note that it’s a rural location, so everything has to be brought in which can be pretty pricey.

2. Cable Bay

Another vineyard option, Cable Bay is known for its award-winning wine, amazing food, and great service. Located on Waiheke Island, this perfect outdoor wedding offers a beautiful lawn with views of the harbor and Auckland’s skyline. Up to 20 chairs can be placed for the ceremony, and for your reception, there are three options depending on the size of your celebration.

The Dining Room has seating for up to 100 or standing room for up to 150 and features large windows offering an amazing view.

The Motukaha Room can seat up to 36 or stand up to 50, and in addition to large windows also offers a private outdoor balcony. Finally, The Wine Library is the most intimate, seating 16 or standing 30, and is located in the wine cellar complete with a stunning chandelier.

3. Old Forest School

Only open as a wedding venue since 2013, this former school in Pongakawa offers a five-acre property to host your wedding. Old Forest School offers an indoor or outdoor ceremony capacity of up to 120 people. Choose the original school hall or the beautiful outdoor trees.

Once your ceremony is over, head to the old barn that seats 120 for the reception. It includes vintage chairs and decorations to give you the rustic wedding of your dreams.

4. Kauri Bay Boomrock

This amazing Auckland venue features gorgeous views of the Hauraki Gulf. This large venue features space for up to 250 guests and has plenty of outdoor game and golf options for your guests to enjoy.

5. Mantells

Mantells is great for if you want an elegant wedding in the city or a waterfront wedding since it offers several unique venues. With great service and food, as well as a reputation for making things as stress-free as possible, it’s a great wedding venue option.

The Mt. Eden location has the feel of an Italian villa tucked away in the heart of the city. Additionally, a large portion of the roof inside has been removed to allow for a courtyard at the center.

The On The Water location offers a terrace that opens onto a beautiful view of the Harbour Bridge. This spacious venue can seat up to 150 guests, or it can be divided up into several spaces if you’d prefer.

Finally, the newest venue, Mantells has just opened their third venue on Tamaki drive. Located in a historic Navy League building, it also offers waterfront dining and will be available very soon.

6. Criffel Station Woolshed

If you’re looking for a rustic setting, this Wanaka venue located in 2,000 hectares of land is the perfect choice for you. Both relaxing and romantic, Criffel Station Woodshed offers the perfect outdoor ceremony space in the countryside.

Look at the beautiful mountaintops through the large trees, or if you’re feeling adventurous, jump into a helicopter for some amazing wedding photos at the top. You’ll have to arrange your own food and drinks for your reception in the woolshed, but Wanaka offers plenty of local options.

7. Old St. Paul’s

If you’re looking for a location straight in the center of Wellington, this beautiful, historical church is an ideal location. With stained glass and a wooden interior, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more traditional and beautiful church location. And you get the option to have the bells ring when the bride enters and the newlyweds leave, so the entire local area will know of your joyous celebration.

If a religion-centric wedding isn’t your thing, don’t fret: you can personalize your wedding with a more modern service. It’s very welcoming to everyone, including same-sex couples.

8. Stoneridge Estate

Another vineyard, this time in Queenstown, Stoneridge Estate is considered one of the town’s best-kept secret. Located on 12 acres, it offers amazing views of Lake Hayes and the surrounding mountains in all directions.

With an art gallery, water gardens, and 5-star bed and breakfast on the property, it has a little bit of everything. You can choose to have your ceremony in the chapel by the lake, on top of a mountain with helicopter transportation, or in the vast garden. The Hayes Room reception area offers a rustic feel with an open fireplace and room to seat 150 guests.

9. Boutique Barn

A rustic location in rural Auckland, Boutique Barn is a popular venue for smaller weddings and can fit up to 50 guests. But for a country setting, it sure is luxurious, including vintage furniture and chandeliers.

The venue offers indoor and outdoor areas, so you can have the perfect wedding no matter the weather. And there are accommodations available so the wedding party can get ready on site.

10. Skyline Queenstown

This unique venue overlooks Lake Wakatipu. Skyline Queenstown offers unbroken panoramic views that will make unbeatable wedding photos. This venue can cater to both small, intimate groups and large weddings of up to 380 guests.

You can choose to have an intimate reception outdoors, followed by a larger indoor reception that features floor-to-ceiling windows. The amazing, accommodating staff will help you come up with the perfect three-course dinner and wedding cake for your individual preferences and needs.
