Pipe Works: What to Do When Rusty Water Appears

We need to have fresh clean water. We’re so lucky that we live in a place where water is treated, we turn on a tap and we have easy access to it.

We don’t even think about it until something happens, like rusty water coming out of our taps. That leads to questions. Is it safe to drink? What causes it? What can I do about it?

Not only that, it could harm your business, especially if you’re trying to serve water to a customer.

Read on to find out what causes rusty water and what you can do about it.

What Causes Rusty Water?

Your water pipes are likely to be made of iron. You’re likely to be aware that with any metal when it oxidizes, rust appears.

That’s true for your water pipes or for knives or cookware. How rusty water appears in your pipes is that pipes can break down and sediment builds up and will make its way through your pipes to your tap.

Is rusty water dangerous to consume? Rust is actually OK to consume on its own. After all, it’s iron, which is good for you. What happens is that there are also bacteria that can build up in the sediment. This can be harmful to you and anyone who consumes the water.

You don’t want to take any chances with rusty water. Wait until it starts running clear again before you consume it.

Let the Pipes Run

Sometimes, there’s a really simple solution to rusty water. All it takes is letting your pipes run for a few minutes and that will clear it up. That will get the sediment build up out of the water and your water will be clean and clear again in no time.

Call a Plumber

Even if your pipes are running clear after a few minutes, rusty water is still a sign that your pipes could be breaking down. That can lead to major problems down the road.

Find a plumber who will be able to tell if the rusty water is from your pipes or from the main water pipes. They’ll also be able to assess if there are any issues with your pipes that you need to be concerned with.

If the problem is due to an issue with your pipes, then you need to have it taken care of right away. There could be leaks in your pipes that can do major water damage to your building.

Rusty Water is Bad for Business

You’ve worked way too hard to build your business. One small thing like rusty water appearing can give your customers the wrong impression. It can be just as bad as your website getting hacked.

Fortunately, there are a number of things that you can do to resolve the issue quickly. You can let the pipes run for a few minutes and if that doesn’t work, then you’ll need to call a plumber to handle the situation.

You can go back to doing what you do best and that’s building your business and keeping your customers happy.
