Superlative Selling: 10 Tips for How to Become a Top Amazon Seller

Are you looking to make it big as an Amazon seller?

Many people who sell on Amazon think that making big money through the site is a nearly impossible task. After all, how can a small third-party seller outsell a huge giant like Amazon?

While it’s certainly not easy to become a top seller on Amazon, it is possible. In fact, Amazon’s third-party marketplace now sells more stuff than Amazon itself.

And, these third-party sellers certainly aren’t making peanuts either. In the US alone, over 140,000 third-party sellers made $100,000 or more this past year.

However, with 1,029,528 new sellers joining Amazon this year, hitting a six-figure salary through Amazon certainly isn’t a walk in the park.

But, if you know what you are doing, then the goal of becoming a top seller becomes a lot more realistic.

So, what do you need to do to become a top Amazon seller?

Check out this guide for the top ten tips that will help you climb in the ranks.

1. Play By the Rules

First things first, you need to make sure you play by the rules if you want to be an Amazon top seller.

Just like eBay and other online selling platforms, Amazon has a lot of rules. The good thing is, however, that unlike eBay, Amazon rarely changes their rules.

Therefore, once you learn the rules, it’s pretty easy to take off from there.

In order to find specific regulations on selling, you should log in to the Seller Central and click on the “help” button. Then, type “Amazon policy” into the search bar.

On the left-hand column of this page, you will see a detailed list outlining the various policies that relate to all of your Amazon activities.

2. Optimize Product Descriptions for Searches

As we said earlier, Amazon is an extremely crowded marketplace, and having a great product alone is not enough for you to become a top seller.

If you want to become a top seller, you first you to make sure they can find you. In order to do this, you need to think like the customer.

For example, let’s say you sell protein bars through Amazon. In order for customers to easily find you, you’ll want to place keywords in your product description that a customer would likely type into the Amazon search bar.

So, for protein bars, you could type in words like “weight loss”, “meal replacement”, breakfast bars”, “protein”, “chococolate”, etc.

The more product identifiers you place in your description, the better chance there is that your customers find your products.

Also, it’s important to keep in mind that Amazon has an algorithm for searches just like Google does.

In order for your product to show up at the top of the list, you’ll want to make sure to study this algorithm. You can learn more about it here.

3. Price Competitively

It may sound a little counterintuitive to consider lowering your prices if your goal is to become a top seller, but trust us on this one.

People come to Amazon because they know they offer competitive prices. Therefore, it’s very important that you know what prices you are competing against, as well as how to list your own products at a price that is competitive for your industry.

A good way to do this is to use Amazon’s Match Low Price feature. This tool allows you to set your own preferences and match with the lowest prices so you can always be on top of the ball when it comes to competing for price.

4. Focus on Reviews

When people search for a product, they have a few different options when it comes to filtering. You can filter by relevancy, price, and, you can filter by rating.

A few different factors go into the overall rating of a product, but for the most part, the rating is determined by how many good reviews the product has.

As a seller, reviews can sometimes be a negative thing, as you really have no control over what someone else says about your product.

But, this is also the exact reason customers often look to reviews before they make a purchase. Buyers love knowing what other people without a bias think about a product, even if they don’t know that person.

In fact, studies show that 97 percent of shoppers say reviews influence their buying decision. And, if there are two products with a similar rating, consumers are more likely to buy the product with more reviews.

But, how do you get reviews if you don’t have any?

The answer is quite simple: you ask for them! Yes, it may feel weird at first, but those products on Amazon that have thousands and thousands of reviews likely started getting their first reviews by simply asking their customers for them.

Now, you don’t need to do this in a push or seedy way. After someone purchases your product, all you need to do is send them a friendly email asking them to leave a review for your product.

Not only do these emails increase your chances of customers actually leaving reviews, but they also give you a chance to interact with your customers and address any problems they need fixing.

5. Make Customer Service Your Top Priority

Last but not least, in order to become a top seller on Amazon, you need to make customer service your top priority.

While people love the convenience of shopping online, they’re also oftentimes wary of it because it presents customer service problems that aren’t an issue when shopping at a brick and mortar business.

In order to ease your customers’ discomfort with the online buying process, you need to make sure you are offering them unparalleled customer service. This means dealing with disputes in a professional manner, responding timely to customer inquiries, and handling returns without a hassle.
