Nip Weeds in the Bud

Weeds are like gossip, they spread fast and far. Unless you want your garden to be overrun by undesirables, weed regularly.

If you leave weeds to flourish, you’ll soon run into a mammoth clean-up task. Rather spend a few minutes each day rooting out weeds as soon as they appear.

2. Mow Correctly

According to Cherry Oak Landscaping, mowing shouldn’t be willy-nilly affair.

Too short, and you weaken your lawn, giving opportunistic weeds an advantage. Most grass species thrive when it’s about 21/2 inches high. Save your lawn by mowing more frequently.

Keep your mower blades sharp. Blunt blades tear the grass instead of cutting it, creating an unkempt appearance.

3. Water Early and Deep

As much as grass loves water, it isn’t a fan of damp conditions. If you water your grass early in the morning, the moisture will have time to seep into the ground before the sun evaporates it.

Any stray drops will vaporize in the heat of the day, saving your lawn from staying moist overnight, which can encourage disease.

When you water your lawn, keep the sprayer going until the soil is damp for a few inches below the surface. Always be mindful of water wastage and take relevant water restrictions into consideration.

4. Amp up the Nitrogen

All lawns need sufficient nitrogen to thrive. Invest in a mix of slow- and fast-release fertilizers. These products will keep feeding your lawn and keep it green for longer.

A word of warning – dormant grass won’t benefit from fertilizer as it can’t absorb nutrients. Feed your lawn during the fall and spring in the northern states and in the spring and summer down south.

5. Spot Train Your Dogs

Those yellow, dead spots that can mar even the most beautiful lawn are thanks to nitrogen overdoses. The culprit – dog urine.

Train your dog to do their business in a particular area of your garden, out of sight.

6. Reseed Regularly

If your lawn still isn’t thriving despite your best care, it may need a little help. Seed over sparse areas to give your lawn the boost it needs.

Fall is a good time to reseed cool-season grasses, while spring does the trick for warm-season species.

7. Aerating for a Perfect Lawn

One of the best things you can do for your lawn is to aerate it every year. Warm-season grasses benefit from aeration in summer, while cool-season grasses prefer fall aeration.

Aerating reduces soil compaction, stimulates new root growth and improves soil filtration.

For best results, apply a layer of compost right after aeration to add some beneficial organic matter to the mix.

More Lawn Care Tips

A perfect lawn goes a long way toward making your yard meet your summer outdoor living expectations.

Check out the rest of our articles for more handy landscaping tips to achieve the ultimate garden spaces.

A perfect lawn is a joy to behold but it’s also important for the environment.
