I’m sure you know that horrible feeling of turning on a shower faucet and waiting for hot water that never comes. Having no hot water is incredibly annoying and rarely occurs during convenient times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re not getting hot water, there are several things you can do. To save you some time and stress, we’ve listed five helpful ways you can get that hot water back soon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

1. What’s Going on With The Water Heater? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the first thing you should do above anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, if multiple people have recently taken hot showers or used lots of hot water, the water heater may be drained of hot water it previously heated. If this is the case, you’re in luck because this just takes some patience. The water will re-heat soon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have a gas water heater, check the gas supply. The gas supply could have accidentally been turned off, or the switch off button may be broken. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.  What’s the Size of the Tank?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The size of the tank of your water heater could be another problem preventing hot water from lasting. This is likely the problem if you notice that you have hot water initially, but it’s quickly running out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your water heater tank may be too small. The best and quickest solution would be to hire a plumber. Even if it’s late at night, you can hire a 24 hour plumber<\/a> who can fix the issue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Check the Pilot Light of Your Heater <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Check to see if there is a flame; your pilot light may have gone out. If so, you will need to merely re-light it. However, if you own a newer water heater, you may not have a pilot light, but rather a spark ignitor or glow plug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If so, you may need to hire a trained professional. However, you can also try troubleshooting<\/a> by turning the regulator to the “off” position and waiting for the gas to disperse. You can then set the regulator light to “pilot”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. If You’re Not Getting Hot Water, You May Have a Gas Leak <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gas leaks can be dangerous because they are colorless and odorless. However, there are chemicals you can add that will help expose the gas if it’s there, such as mercaptan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you suspect there is leaking, quickly turn the switch off and make sure the gas valve is off. Because gas leaks can be dangerous, it would be wise to call a plumber or a gas utility company. This ensures the problem is fixed while maintaining personal safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. If You Have an Electric Water Heater, Check for a Tripped Circuit Breaker <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is another common issue for electric water heaters<\/a>. If you check your circuit box, you should be able to see if the breaker has been tripped. If so, it won’t be in line with the other breakers in the box. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this happens, try turning it off and then on again. However, if this doesn’t work, you may need to call an electrician. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
