Stressed? You’re not alone. On a scale of 1-10 (with 1 being the least stressed and 10 being the most stressed), Americans on average score a 4.9.

Chances are that the stressors in your life are beyond your control. So when it comes to managing stress, it’s important to focus on what you can control.

Read on to learn how to lower anxiety and stress to keep yourself healthy and happy.

Meditation and Mindfulness

One of the most popular ways to manage stress levels is M&M: meditation and mindfulness. These two words can make a huge difference in how you see the world.

Many people think that meditation is strictly a religious practice. But it’s actually an extremely popular method of stress regulation, and it’s super easy to get started.

Just a few minutes of meditation per day can make a difference in your stress levels. To get started, just take a seat on the floor (or somewhere comfortable), close your eyes, and focus on reciting a mantra. This mantra can be any short phrase that is meaningful to you, such as “I am in control” or “All is well.”

Meditation is a great way to increase your mindfulness. In other words, it’s a perfect chance for you to be in the moment. Taking deep breaths and slowing down the pace of your life can decrease stress, too.

Draw Support From Friends and Family

Nobody does it all on their own. In times of increased stress or anxiety, it’s important to lean on your support system and spend time with people who care about you.

In the modern era, it’s easier than ever to speak to your family and friends. Even a quick text can make a huge difference in your day (or someone else’s!)

Take Time for Self-Care

Sometimes it can seem like it’s impossible to make time for your own health, much less some pampering. But at the same time, self-care is an important step in lowering stress levels.

For example, one of the best ways to fight stress is exercise. Going for a brisk walk or jog increases feel-good chemicals in your brain and can help you improve your self-esteem.

Another important part of self-care is good sleep. Sleep hygiene and health can be affected by a variety of things such as stress, anxiety, insomnia, or even a bad mattress.

To get the most out of your nighttime hours, set yourself up for sleep with a consistent bedtime routine. Avoid screentime within one hour of bedtime to help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
