3 Common MacBook Problems (and How to Fix Them)

Have you noticed your MacBook has started to show signs of how old it is? Does it suddenly feel or act sluggish?

Before you go to the store for a new computer, you may be able to find some quick and easy fixes to the problems you are having.

Keep reading for some of the common MacBook problems you may encounter and how you can fix them.

1. The MacBook Suddenly Dies

The first step to fix this problem is to see if the battery is charging properly. If it isn’t, this is a different problem.

However, if your Mac is turning off randomly, even with a charged battery, this is a different type of problem.

If this issue occurs, you can restart the Mac using the power button and wait for it to turn back on and load MacOS. After macOS is loaded, restart the Mac once more.

This lets the computer perform a full, healthy shutdown. The next step is to reset the SMC or System Management Controller. This is responsible for controlling some of the important hardware processes of the Mac, such as sleep modes, battery charging, and others.

If something has happened, resetting the SMC is a fast way to fix this issue. If the SMC step isn’t working, it may be time to take it to a Mac repair store to determine the underlying problem.

2. Freezing Issues

Having a frozen MacBook isn’t unusual. If your system is trying to run more apps than it is able to support, there is a system file error, or the storage is almost full; this problem can occur.

If you have an unresponsive MacBook, there are a few things you can do. One is to hold the “options” button on the keyboard and click the app icons from the dock. When you do this, all the apps running will be “force quit” one at a time.

If the cursor is not responding, press option, escape and command at the same time. This causes the Force Quit menu to pop up on the screen. When it pops up, you receive a list of all the apps running, and you can choose what to close.

The last option is to hold the power button down until the system restarts.

3. Startup Issues

If your Mac doesn’t boot properly, and you are looking at a gray or blank startup screen, open the system in Safe Mode. While in Safe Mode, the MacOS will boot the bare minimum of drivers and software required and run a startup disk check.

When this is done, it will repair the directory issues that may be causing the startup problems.
