In 2018, more than 70,000 people and families moved inter-state.
If you’re relocating over a long distance, the thought of cross country moving may be giving you nightmares.
Don’t worry; if you plan well, moving across the country doesn’t have to be hard.
Read on for some cross country moving secrets.
1. Don’t Move Your Junk
The more you take you with you, the more expensive your move will be.
We all have junk that we’ve moved from one house to another and still never used. This is your opportunity to get rid of it. There’s no point paying to move things that are just going end up gathering dust in your new home.
2. Do Your Research
There’s a lot of research you can do to save yourself any headaches.
Make sure you get quotes from a number of moving companies. Check out online reviews or speak to friends for recommendations. Ensure that the companies you’re looking at are properly insured.
The more research you do, the smoother things will go.
3. Plan Travel Well in Advance
The process of finding homes for sale on the other side of the country is tough. You already know that it involves a lot of travel.
Make sure you plan your journey to your new home well in advance. If you’re driving you may need to book hotels. If you’re flying you want to be certain that you can get a flight that gets you to your new home before your movers are due to arrive.
The further in advance you can plan, the easier (and cheaper) things will be.
4. Make Sure You Have Contact Numbers
It’s vital that you have contact numbers for your moving company, and that they have your numbers too.
You’re not going to be traveling together, and if anything goes wrong, you’ll need to be able to get in touch with each other. Once they’ve driven off, it’s too late.
Give them as many numbers as possible in case your phone dies or you can’t get a signal.
5. Keep Essentials Accessible
After a long journey to your new home, you’re going to be tired. The last thing you want is to realize that everything you need for your first night is somewhere amongst the huge pile of boxes.
Pack a bag or a box with all the essentials you’ll need for your first night, and make sure you know exactly where it is. You’ll need bedding, toiletries, towels, food, clothing, and some way to make your favorite caffeinated beverage.
Don’t forget your phone charger too; trying to track that down in all your boxes would not be fun.
Cross Country Moving Doesn’t Have to Be Hard
There’s no reason why cross country moving needs to be any more difficult than moving down the street.
As long as you plan ahead and choose the right company, your move should be smooth sailing. We wish you the best of luck!
