The modern office is many things. Progressive, diverse, and high-tech are all appropriate terms to describe it. But that last one comes with some baggage—the dreaded tangle of cables at your desk.
While the advent of modern technology has made office life easier, it’s done no favors for the art of workspace organization. Even if your area is otherwise tidy, a mess of cables can disrupt your feng shui.
If you’re tired of living under the tyrannical rule of unsightly cable clutter, you’re in luck. Here are 5 cable management tips to make your work area both functional and great to look at.
1. Bundling Cables
One thing that makes cables so unruly is that there are so darn many of them in one place. A great way to nip that in the bud is by bundling them all together. This can be accomplished a number of ways.
For smaller jobs, standard twist ties will suffice. Bundle them together, place twist ties strategically, and your problem is solved.
When dealing with a particularly dense concentration of cables, you can get velcro cable ties. If you want to go all in, you could even get some custom rubber grommets to secure them in place.
2. Labels
Even if you’re bundling your cables together, you still need to know which cables go where. A simple solution is to label your cables.
If you want to do it DIY, you can wrap some masking tape around them. Leave a tab at the end to give you somewhere to write on.
For a more pro technique, you can buy special write on ties in most office supply stores. These let you mark which cables are which. No more accidentally unplugging your computer.
3. Get Them Off the Floor
Not only does it look bad, but having your cables on the floor also makes basic like vacuuming a challenge. Get those things off the floor.
Go to your local office supply and ask about getting cables off the ground. Most will carry useful products that can attach to the underside of your desk and get your cables out of the way.
4. Binder Clips
It doesn’t get much more DIY than this. You can get these pretty much anywhere and they’re super useful.
Attach them to the back of your desk. Then run your cables through the metal hoops on the end. You can keep cables separated this way, or use them to help relegate the cables to a specific path.
5. Use Fewer Cables
This is so obvious that you probably didn’t think of it, but one simple solution is to cut down on your cables.
Especially for most office-oriented tech, most things can be made wireless. If you’re still relying on old wired tech when you could be wireless, update what you can.
By reducing your cables to only the most necessary ones, you greatly reduce the number of cables you have to manage.
