The weather’s getting warmer. It’s time to break out those bicycles and get yourself outside! But while riding along the side of the road can be enjoyable, it loses a bit of its luster after a while.
That’s why you’re here: you’re looking for a few new activities to do on your bike. Fortunately, we can help you with that. Without further ado, here are the best biking activities to get into this spring and summer.
Hit the Ramp
There’s nothing wrong with biking on a flat surface. However, it can get pretty old after a while. At some point, you just need to get a little air.
This is when it’s time to break out the ramps. A bike ramp will enable you to launch yourself into the air, allowing you to carry out all sorts of tricks. It will add variety to your bicycling sessions and help to bring a newfound joy to the activity as a whole.
You can find ramps on sale online and in sporting goods stores for between $50 and $150. These ramps come in many different sizes and types and can generally be used by riders of all weights.
Note, while you could take any type of bike over a ramp, the bikes that are best suited for such are BMX bikes. These have small wheels, a low center of gravity, and are specifically designed to perform tricks. For starters, search for one on Bike Vortex.
Roll Down the Mountain
Another way to get off the flat surface is to go mountain biking. This is an activity in which you ride your bicycle on rough and hilly terrains. It’s most commonly done on a mountain bike, as these bikes’ tires are better equipped to handle rough and unpredictable terrains.
Mountain biking comes in many extremes. Once you’re highly experienced in it, you can ride down literal mountains. But to get started, you should find rough bike trails in your area and give it a go.
If you do decide to get into this, you should wear some safety equipment. Not only will you need a helmet but elbow and knee guards as well. It might even be a good idea to wear a mouthguard.
Blast Through an Obstacle Course
Riding a bike around aimlessly isn’t a bad thing to do. But it might not keep your interest for long. This is when it might be time to break out the obstacle course.
You can create an obstacle course for yourself by setting up cones and other objects. Place these objects in such a way that they force you to turn at sharp angles. Integrate things like trees and hedges, and even through in a ramp or two.
Then, you can race against your friends, seeing who can finish in the quickest time possible.
Bowl Over Some Pins
Another way to have fun on your bike is to play bike bowling. This is a game in which you set up human-sized pins and then ride your bike into them, attempting to knock as many pins down as possible.
Don’t worry: this doesn’t hurt. The pins are inflatable and are about as soft as can be. As such, this is a great game for adults and kids alike.
All you need to play are the pins themselves. You can find these online by searching “giant inflatable bowling pins”. Amazon should have a variety of sets for you to choose from.
Ride a Multi-person Bike
Generally speaking, when you’re riding a bike, you’re going it alone. But it doesn’t have to be this way. You also have the option to ride a multi-person bike with a collection of your family or friends.
This is much more of a social activity than it is a physical one. You might even do it while on vacation as a means of touring the area. It’s sure to get everyone cooperating, and will almost certainly inspire some laughs.
Truthfully speaking, buying a multi-person bike probably isn’t a great investment for you. But, depending on your location, there might be some for rent around you. For a few bucks, you can have quite a fun afternoon.
Drag Race
If you’re looking to get your competitive juices flowing, you should consider facilitating drag races on your bikes. Line up at a given spot, have someone count down from 3, and try to take off from the line as quickly as possible.
From there, you can race to a designated area. The first person to get there wins and moves on to race the next person.
This can be a lot of fun, as it is one of the few summer activities that inspire you to push your bike to its top speed. Just one note: wear a helmet!
Hold a Bike Scavenger Hunt
Who doesn’t like a good scavenger hunt? There are few activities better to bring others together and inspire a good time.
Now, consider holding a scavenger while also biking with friends. That just ups the intensity, making for a more fulfilling time overall.
Drop Items Into Cups
The last activity we’re going to discuss is a game in which the participants drop items into cups as they ride their bikes. These cups will be set up on each side of a riding track, and the rider will need to throw some sort of item into them without coming to a complete stop. The goal of the game is to get as many items into as many cups as possible.
You can throw essentially any item into the cup (given that it’s small enough, of course). However, it’s often wise to use something small like a penny.
