1. You Can’t Be a Control Freak

As an event planner, you want to do whatever it takes to make sure that your client has the event they imagined, but you also need to show some flexibility. If you’re too controlling and unwilling to consider alternate scenarios–whether it be on the color scheme or the food menu–you’ll end up sabotaging the success of the event.

2. Your Job Doesn’t End When the Event Begins

3. You Need to be Tech-Obsessed
As a professional party planner, your job is to make someone else’s dreams come true and to turn their vision into a reality. It sounds exciting–and it is–but it’s also time-consuming.
Since the invention of smartphones, people are never really unreachable, and no one knows that better than an event planner. It doesn’t matter if it’s six in the morning, eight at night, a Saturday, or a holiday. If a client wants to get in touch with you to discuss something, you need to be available.
That’s the downside. The upside is that, because of that same smart technology, you don’t have to be glued to a physical office. As long as you can answer and make calls, connect to the Internet, and respond to emails, you can be working.
You need to be willing to juggle a variety of gadgets and to be available to clients and vendors at any time. If you can do that, you can work from almost anywhere and still get your job done.
4. Creativity is Everything
As a professional party planner, you will be expected to have an answer to every question and a solution for every problem. You need to be able to think creatively, and propose ideas that may be a little outside of the norm.
When possible, suggest ways that will help your client personalize their event. That could mean introducing a menu of all their favorite foods, or creating a theme that honors a favorite book or movie.
Customized favors are also a great way to add some personality to an event. If your client has a phrase or saying that they love, have it printed on a party favor that guests can take with them.
It’s a unique way to incorporate that personal note into the event. Guests will also get a physical item that will remind them of the event for years to come.
