A commercial remodel can be a great investment, but you must be prepared. Asking these 5 questions before you start will help ensure the process goes smoothly.
You know how important first impressions are, right? When someone comes to your business, what’s the first thing they see?
For most, it will be the exterior of your business. Your customer only takes about seven seconds to develop a first impression based on what they see.
Have you looked at your business lately? If not, now may be the time to do so. Are things damaged, faded and old-looking? If so, it may be time for a remodel.
A commercial remodel offers more than a few benefits. However, before getting started, you need to make sure to ask the right questions and find the right contractor.
Five questions to help you get started are found here.
1. What Zoning Ordinances Apply to Your Commercial Remodel?
Before starting any remodeling or renovation project, you need to understand all the zoning ordinances for your municipality. How is the structure currently zoned and what do you plan to do after the remodel?
The answers to these questions may dictate a re-zoning of the structure.
2. Is the Building Up to Code?
Every state has set building codes, in addition to county and city ordinances. There’s a good chance that your commercial remodel will need a bit of updating to meet the code requirements in place.
Building codes will outline important requirements for a buildings HVAC, fire safety, electrical and plumbing system, among others.
It is a good idea to find contractors who are familiar with state requirements.
3. Is the Team Experienced with Remodels?
Experience is a must when it comes to a commercial property remodel.
Architectural boards, historical boards, and municipalities have several requirements and rules regarding building codes and zoning that have to be followed.
Make sure your general contractor and subcontractors understand these requirements.
4. Does the Contractor Understand Your Vision?
While this may seem unnecessary to ask, you want to achieve the desired results for your remodel, right?
After all, if you are imagining a flintlastic roof, and the contractor isn’t, your vision may not come to fruition.
Make sure they fully understand what you want before getting started.
5. Does the Contractor Think Any Issues are Going to Arise?
While there is no way to predict the issues or problems with a construction project that may occur, it is still good to ask.
An experienced contractor should be able to evaluate a project and determine if any problems are likely to be seen.
