How to Avoid the Most Common Roof Replacement Mistakes at All Costs

Did you know that a laminated-shingle roof can last for 35 to 40 years in Missouri, but in Florida, it may only last 15?

Roof replacement is definitely a do it once, do it right kind of job. Yet time and again, homeowners make the same common roof replacement mistakes and end up paying big time.

How can you avoid getting caught out? Let’s find out.

Choosing the First Available Contractor

“You can start next week? That’s awesome!” But is it really?

If a professional roofing contractor is so low on work that they can turn up almost immediately, that could be a warning sign. Maybe nobody else wanted to hire them. If this is the case, do a little extra digging.

Start by checking that they’re a licensed roofer. Then look for some online reviews. If you’re still not satisfied, ask for a list of former clients that you can visit, so that you can see their work for yourself.

If something’s telling you there’s something off with this residential roofing company, let the search continue!

Neglecting Permits

Permits keep everyone safe. They let the city know the scale of your work, and you have the protection of their approval before you begin. It’s easy to conclude that your contractor will take care of all that, but as the homeowner, it’s your responsibility.

That’s not to say that the best roofing company won’t handle it for you. Just don’t assume that they have. Always check and ask to see the permit before they begin work on your house.

If you don’t, you’ll run into issues with the city. They could fine you or even have you undo the work. You will also invalidate your insurance by not having the correct permit in place.

Not Getting the Right Roofing Material

As we mentioned at the outset, you can’t rely on averages when it comes to choosing the type of shingles you’ll use on your roof. As Far West Roofing will tell you, snowy climates take their toll on roofs. You need to choose shingles that are going to keep your roof watertight and stand up to your local climate.

In hot climates, this may mean choosing metal, clay, or slate roofing materials that may be a little more costly than asphalt. In colder climates, metal roofs are ideal as the snow sheds easily and they’re highly leak resistant.

Getting Shingles from Different Sources

It might make good economic sense to snag cheap deals on shingles wherever you can. The problem is that if you do that, they won’t match. Your roof will look like a patchwork quilt, and you won’t achieve the sleek finish you had in mind.

Get a Roof Replacement That Will Stand the Test of Time
